• AmeriCorps is a federally funded grant designed to place volunteers in underserved communities, addressing critical community needs in education, public safety, wellness, and the environment.  Operation AmeriCorps East St. Louis strives to help improve academic outcomes for students in East St. Louis School District 189 by incorporating multiple streams of national service.  AmeriCorps members commit to one year of service ensuring that every child feels safe, supported, and motivated to achieve their dreams.

    • AmeriCorps members currently serve students in grades 6-10,  providing additional academic, social, and emotional supports during the school day and in after-school programs.
    • AmeriCorps State & National members assist in the daily implementation of the B.A.G.s initiative by facilitating leadership classes or behavior interventions, working with parents and students to promote and monitor student attendance, and providing tutoring in the academic skills center.
    • AmeriCorps VISTA members manage East Side Works, a project that stemmed from the East Side Aligned coalition to promote successful postsecondary pathways for all District 189 students. East Side Works provides students the opportunity to virtually engage with career coaches, attend job shadowing events, or obtain internships to help gain vital experience for postsecondary success.
    • AmeriCorps NCCC members join our team each summer to assist with various community projects, ensuring that we are taking a holistic approach in providing students safe options in the community.

Community members are recruited to serve full-time or part-time over the course of a year with AmeriCorps. Full-time members are eligible to receive a living allowance, health insurance assistance, or childcare (if they qualify).  Upon successful completion of the program members may also be eligible for the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award.  Learn more by reading the AmeriCorps Fact Sheet.

Department Mission Statement: To inspire, challenge, and empower students and community members to become socially,  intellectually, and civically engaged citizens.
